The Mystics

What appears to me in these paintings is beyond my own comprehension, much like a Mystic whose spiritual understanding of truth is beyond the intellect. The way I create paintings within the Mystic Series is completely intuitive. I go into them without any idea or plan of what the painting will be. I throw paint down on the canvas or paper and soon after images begin appearing to me out of the paint. This process of painting started years ago for with a morning routine I would do with coffee and a pen. While drinking my morning coffee, I would spill some in my journal and then I would find an image in the spill. I called them dripthoughts. I am consistently delighted in the mysterious magic that proceeds to happen. The images within the coffee or paint splatters that leap out to me seem to always correlate to something my subconscious has absorbed, or an event my conscious has recently experienced.

Everything in nature: each place, each being, each inanimate object holds millions of stories in their form. The multiplicity of complex patterns contained in each individual changes the way we engage with each other and with our surroundings. There is so much more to each of us, to each animal, or building or tree that we can see on the surface with our naked eye. How can we meet our own and each others’ individual complexities with grace? How can we be more transparent with our own fears and let the veil come down to finally accept that we are all one? Can we honor and thank our own complicated pasts and those of our ancestors and engage with the outside world free of fear, biases, regret, bitterness… to live in a world of more simplicity and love?

Maybe the answer to a more peaceful life is to simply recognize the noise that lies enveloped in the quiet, to observe the complexity of life that’s contained in the inanimate, and accept the infinite fractals that inhabit each individual…starting with ourselves.
